December 15, 2017

It gives us great pleasure to welcome Robin Reardon as the guest on Episode 142: Are You Out of Your Mind? It’s All About Love!!

This week Robin Reardon joins us to talk about her motto, why she started writing LGBTQ, why she writes for teens specifically, and how she includes all manner of subjects into her work!

Follow Robin and support her work:

Bio:

Robin Reardon is an inveterate observer of human nature, and her primary writing goal is to create stories about all kinds of people, some of whom happen to be gay or transgender–people whose destinies are not determined solely by their sexual orientation or identity. Her secondary writing goal is to introduce readers to concepts or information they might not know very much about. (See the “Digging Deeper” sections on most of the individual book pages for links to background information and research done for the novels.)

Robin’s motto is this: The only thing wrong with being gay is how some people treat you when they find out.

Interests outside of writing include singing, nature photography, and the study of comparative religion. Robin writes in a butter yellow study with a view of the Boston, Massachusetts skyline.

SA “Baz” Collins:
SA Collins hails from the San Francisco Bay Area where he lives with his (legal) husband, their daughter and, wonder of all wonders because he only just broke 50, a whirlwind of a granddaughter (pictured ). Along with two exotic looking cats, they happily live out the Republican Neo-Con nightmare. Their home is filled with laughter and love whilst shouting at the top of their lungs (or very near to) – something that causes great aggravation to the hubby who prefers solemn quietude (he’s seldom rewarded for his wishes – though he tries). Science and knowledge reign supreme in their home and no topic is too sacred to discuss. In their near 20 years together they’ve (truly) not had a single argument – so they must be doing something right.

Vance Bastian:
Vance Bastian loves being a professional storyteller. He writes urban fantasy about sandmen and reapers. He has grown his acting and voice background into to a career performing voice-over work and narration for both radio and audiobooks.

He is also a founding host of the WROTE podcast – bringing you interviews and news of authors who write, perform, and tell LGBTQ stories.

When nobody’s looking, Vance is a complete sci-fi and fantasy geek.

Brian Peyton Joyner

October 21, 2017

It gives us great pleasure to welcome Brian Peyton Joyner as the guest on Episode 134: Bridge the Divide!

This week Brian Peyton Joyner joins the show to discuss his novel, The Wisdom of Stones, the struggle Brian went through coming out as a senior at a Baptist College, his podcast, and his Agreeable Disagreement movement!

Follow Brian and support his work:

Bio:

Brian Peyton Joyner was born and reared in a small town in South Carolina. He spent the first years of his life living in a trailer in Iva, South Carolina, a town of about a thousand people. HIs Grandpa used to brag that at least it had a red light, whereas its rival city did not. When he was young, he moved to Anderson where he attended public school, including T.L. Hanna High. In 1988, he graduated top of his class. His valedictory speech contained so many quotes (many in Latin) that he’s grateful VCRs no longer exist.

He next attended Furman University, a liberal arts college that was affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention when he enrolled. His senior year, he came out of the closet and broke off his engagement to his high school sweetheart. That same year, Furman decided to break its ties with the SC Baptists and became an independent university. Coincidence? Albert Einstein said, “Coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous.” Brian tends to agree with him.

During his first year of law school, he worked retail across Michigan Avenue from the man that would later become his husband. Even though they spent almost a year no more than a hundred yards apart, they didn’t meet until 13 years later.

In 1996, he took a job at one of the largest law firms in the world and moved to San Diego, California. Ten years later, he met his husband. They married on Halloween in 2008, and four days later Prop 8 passed.

For twenty years, he made his parents proud when he worked as a corporate attorney. But on August 1, 2016, he quit his job (and disappointed his parents). He’s now a full-time writer, speaker, and advocate for “agreeable disagreement.”

His debut novel, The Wisdom of Stones, was published in May 2017.

** Episode Note: **
There was some discussion about movies this episode.  The title SA Collins was thinking of is Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow. Viewed on Netflix.

Bio:

J. C. Long is an American expat living in Japan, though he’s also lived stints in Seoul, South Korea—no, he’s not an Army brat; he’s an English teacher. He is also quite passionate about Welsh corgis and is convinced that anyone who does not like them is evil incarnate. His dramatic streak comes from his lifelong involvement in theater. After living in several countries aside from the United States, J. C. is convinced that love is love, no matter where you are, and is determined to write stories that demonstrate exactly that.

His favorite things in the world are pictures of corgis, writing, and Korean food (not in that order… okay, in that order). J. C. spends his time not writing thinking about writing, coming up with new characters, attending Big Bang concerts, and wishing he were writing. The best way to get him to write faster is to motivate him with corgi pictures. Yes, that is a veiled hint.
